The Elements—Water
Water represents emotion and intuition. It also symbolizes initiation and transformation. Water can come to us in the gentle sprinkles of rain, or in the driving, howling pinpricks of a hurricane. Water changes itself according to temperature, and yet it is not lost. Water is the element of emotional release, flowing out of us in a small stream or a flooding river. Water makes us aware of out inner flow of feelings, needs, and fears. Water is essential to our survival, and is provided in abundance by Nature. Water insists that we learn when to “go with the flow”, harness its forces, ride on its power, or simply float away on top of it. Water is also the element of the womb, and therefore the medium of our emotional rebirth. Water forces us to face our personal realities and to reveal our inner Selves, if only to ourselves. Water is the element of unconditional love, of positive self-regard, and of pure emotional understanding. Water is the element of memories and dreams. It is the force that compels us to search for the magick within ourselves. Water can allow the funcitons of the body to flow properly. It can cool fevers, and when expressed in tears, soothe the spirit as well. Water became the holy element blessed by the priests and priestesses, life and spirit symbolized in one element.
Activating the imagery associated with water is best done beside a beautiful lake, on the banks of a mighty river, or at the seashore. If those are not available to you, choose a time during a gentle rainshower. Water’s transformation is physically seen in rain drops, evaporating mists, hail, and snow. Water reminds us to have patience during the cold times of our lives. We know that just as the ice melts and returns to water, so will our emotional lives. Use the following exercise for releasing and clearing of emotions.
Homework:
Imagine that you are sitting beside a deep pool of dark blue water surrounded by soft, lavy ferns. On the surface of the pool, lavendar water lilies float smidst bright green, heart-shaped leaves. Here and there, iridescent dragonflies dart over the waters, their tiny wings reflecting in the sunlight. You have brought a wooden bowl, which you dip into the pool and fill with the cool, pure water. As you do so, the surface of the water shifts and swirls, causing the water lilies to dance in delight. You cup your hands and fill them with water from your bowl. You hold your hands high, prayerfully honoring the beauty surrounding you. You gently splash your face with the crystal-clear water. The coolness brings a sense of refreshment deep within your Self. As the water trickles down your face and neck, you feel it wash away the worries, the sadness, the pains, and the problems that have expressed themselves on your face. You continue this little ceremony, each time clearing away more and more of the feelings that have lined your face and brought you frowns. As the Sun dries the water on your face, you find that you are smiling once again.
